Little Wild Eye

Little Egret - Egretta garzetta

A beautiful white Egret with long black legs and yellow feet, which is the easiest way to tell them apart from the other similar egret species. There are two subspecies of this Widespread bird which covers a large proportion of Africa, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

They are entertaining birds to observe as they hunt in the shallows of bodies of water, prancing and dancing about, darting their bill into the water at prey that has caught their attention.

The IUCN has them listed as ‘Least Concern’ but faces threats as wetlands around the world are degraded. They were once hunted in great numbers for the plumes they grow during breeding season, fortunately this is no longer an issue.
