Common Wildebeest - Connochaetes taurinus

An animal that has been made famous by the sheer numbers, epitomised by the ‘Great Migration’ through the Serengeti and Maasai Mara.

These highly gregarious herbivores have 5 different subspecies.

They are listed as ‘Least Concern’ on the IUCN Redlist. Large tracts of the range have been lost to population and agricultural growth in the past. Huge numbers have been lost when migration routes were blocked by fences and in extreme drought their passage to greener pastures were cut off.
