This is one of Africa’s smallest owls and is very easily overlooked with its highly camouflaged plumage and nocturnal behaviour.
They are predominantly found in arid woodland, where they feed on insects and small mammals. They are monogamous and nest in a cavity in a tree.
These owls are currently listed as ‘least concern’ but do face issues with habitat loss through deforestation as well as being known on the international pet trade.
